Social issues in Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times”
The movie is set around the time of the Great Depression, due to which unemployment and homelessness had soared along with the boon in industrialization. The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) in the movie struggles to live in modern industrial society with the help of a young homeless woman.
Strikes are initiated by people to bring reforms and address social issues. The movie showcases people joining strikes to demonstrate communalism to address and stand against the capitalism that had arisen along with industrialization. This points us towards the social instability of the citizens and social disorganization. These strikes are broken and disrupted by the authorities displaying political oppression.
At the beginning of the movie, the tramp has an anxiety attack due to the stress and pace of the repetitive work. I believe, mental issues like anxiety are social issues as many have suffered and many are suffering with them and they should be expressed more.
The movie was hence, I perceive, successful in portraying these issues skillfully with Chaplin's comedic touch.
